Well, my first thought is "when would it end"?  What about a 
user who had the message size as the first numeric field?

I think that, given that scan is infinitely flexible, it's 
reasonable for exmh to require that the message number be the 
first non-blank field on the scan output.

If someone REALLY wants to dig into it they (i.e., the affected 
user) could dig back thru CVS and prove that it changed 
recently.  But my recollection is similar to yours, it's been 
that way "forever".
