I had the same problem.
When I entered 8-bit characters (umlaut), they seemed to be ok. Sedit showed
them. But when I send the message, the message body got garbled and all
the umlauts changed to 0xff.
As Brent worked out, I seemed to be a font problem.
But when changing from 2.7 to 2.7.2 I changed nothing within my X11
configuration. (Solaris 9, /usr/sfw/bin/wishx8.3). The old version 2.7
even works.
So I investigated a litte bit further and compiled myself a new tcl-tk (8.4)
version.
This works with 2.7.2.
So problem seems to be incombability to tcl-tk 7.3?

Bis dann
Klaus
