Yes, that (and a few other variants) occurred to me too...

Meanwhile, Tcl/Tk 8.4 has some oddities with spacing around widgets, or at
least that particular installation does, so I'm back to 8.3; as I know how
to work around the 8-bit character mangling problem, that's better overall
for now.
