huh? the shell metachars you're mentioning above aren't allowed!

     tspecials :=  "(" / ")" / "<" / ">" / "@" /

                   "/" / "[" / "]" / "?" / "="
                   ; Must be in quoted-string,
                   ; to use within parameter values

it's actually just a few extra punctuation characters that are
allowed but weren't caught by [:print:] (which is :alnum:).
