One thing I benchmarked as being amazingly piggy is the handling of *marking*
the ftoc display, at a very low level - if you have a 30K msg folder, it takes
it a *long* time to mark the "unread" messages, and as far as I could tell,
it was specifically the Tk call to set the display face.

Not sure if that directly addresses your issue - but it might be a related
Tk canvas issue.
