This gets particularly sub-optimal (well into pessimal, in fact) if you:

1) Reply to a message with text.
2) Trim out a lot of the text by selecting and hitting ctl-w.
3) Go to another window (Eterm, Firefox, anything but exmh) and select some
test to paste in the reply.
4) Go to the reply, and watch in wonder as what gets inserted isn't the
text you just selected, but the last thing you lopped out with ctl-w.

Somewhere in the list archives, there should be a technical explaination of
this - I'll look around and see if I can find it....
