Thanks for the reply. I did indeed narrow it down to MH. The regular commands 
worked (scan, show etc.), but the message display in exmh did not. I moved my 
.mh_profile from the old system (installed by another person) to the one I am 
building. Turns out I went from nmh .26 to 1.0.4. There are a few things that 
have changed. After fixing them yesterday, things seem to be working as 
advertised.
