cat .mailrc
set smtp=my.server.com
set smtp-auth-user=thatsme
set smtp-auth-password=1234567
I got that from the man mail

Edit>Account Settings>Outgoing Server (SMTP)>Edit>Use Name and Password
In sylpheed-claws, what I am using now to send mail, the information is put
in ~/.sylpheed-claws/accountrc
smtp_server=my.server.com
smtp_user=thatsme
smtp_password=123456
The values are put there by the program after inputting similar to
thunderbird.

I did take a look and tried
send -verbose -server my.server.com -user thatsme -password 123456 -sasl
and it comes back "user unknown"
