Text/Plain and Display inline

With some digest style mailing lists, even within
one list, some mime e-mails come through with
text/plain parts that display inline and some
require "Invoke menu with right button" and
when I do, "Display inline" is NOT set.
In the e-mail cases that do display, if
I invoke the menu with the right button,
Display inline IS set.  What causes the difference
and is it possible to set something somewhere
that will ALWAYS display text/plain inline????
