I suspect that I also ran into this (although I was not using Ubuntu, so
perhaps the cause was not the same).  I changed Exmh to use tclsh8.4 and
the fonts were no longer unbearable.

To be fair, there were some fonts I did like with tclsh8.5 but they were
either too large or they rendered in a fuzzy manner:
