My pop up windows are not blank from client on FreeBSD 11.0-CURRENT #12182: Mon
Oct 19 23:57:08 CEST 2015 amd64 to display on FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE

Also native client & screen both on FreeBSD 11.0-CURRENT were OK,
both More buttons worked OK

(OK, exmh was agonising slow to start, but that is some NFS + AMD
mistake on my part, 'cos I have a lot of mail dirs under NFS symbolic
linked home directories )

native client & screen both on FreeBSD-10.1 RELEASE I could test
later if you need, I have an X lib to fix first.

Sound like an X weirdity to me, perhaps not an EXMH problem as such,
Maybe a process suspends, or lack of swap & thrashing, or frame buffer problem or ?
eg I see similar problems at times on odd apps,
eg on a display running FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE with client running
xestic client from /usr/ports/misc/estic on FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE

I noticed in the estic case, that using a panneling window manager
/usr/ports/x11-wm/fvwm2 to switch between virtual screens seemed
to partially but incompletely refresh xestic client.

You might be barking up the wrong tree, re perl & font paths, You may
see similar X problems with some other apps, I saw similar with
video players (eg some of maybe vlc xine mplayer ) when playing
with /usr/ports/x11/xrandr & dual screens on one frame buffer, &
windows weren't refreshing

Maybe use top & ps & look in window marked "Message display" to see
if anything is still pending. I noticed when exmh first displayed
"Starting /usr/local/bin/exmh-bg" It didnt respond to More (the
More that has first item Print, last Save) then would respond later,
(presumably my badly configured AMD + NFS was slowing my exmh start up)

PS if xlsfonts runs slow, that will tell you of a hang, possibly between PCs,
or on loaded hardware depending how your configured.
