If the attachments are part of the multipart/mixed, they should not be displayed if the MUA is displaying the text/plain. The nesting of body parts in MIME matters. About the only solution I can think of is for a multipart/alternative, to put up a small summary of the part(s) contained in the alternative(s) not being displayed.
