Problem subscribing to ezmlm-based lists using email aliases

Hello Everyone
After a reasonable (I hope) attempt at searching the internet for
online archives for this list, I now bring my problem here.
I am running Fedora Core 6, and the email program that I use is
Claws-Mail 2.7.1.  (Although my extensive tests on this issue have
involved my trying Mutt, Pine & Squirrelmail (in addition to testing
the "problem" aliases from outside accounts such as Hotmail,
Insightbb.com, Gmail)

The problem arises when I attempt to subscribe to mailing lists that
are run using Ezmlm.  The mailing lists that I have this issue with are
as follows:
[email protected]
[email protected]

and now:
[email protected]

I have a fully qualified domain name (afolkey2.net) and I have
customarily used different aliases for different mailing list.  A few
examples of list-specific aliases that I use with no problem on Mailman
based lists:
lists-bibletime
lists-fedora
lists-fedora_package_announcements
lists-gimpdevel
lists-kde
lists-kdedevel
lists-krename
lists-sword
lists

These are listed in my /etc/aliases file in the standard format.
Example:
lists-bibletime:        steve
lists-fedora:   steve
lists-clawsmail:        steve
lists-fedora_package_announcements:     steve
lists-gimpdevel:        steve
lists-kde:      steve
lists-kdedevel: steve
lists-krename:  steve
lists-sword:    steve
lists:	steve

In the name of trying to get to the bottom of this, I unsubscribed from
the mailing lists that I subscribe to with the above mentioned aliases
and then attempted to resubscribe.  Result: Perfect success in every
re-subscription attempt.  Things worked perfectly.

The problem is when I try to subscribe to, let's say
"[email protected]" using any (I've tried them all on multiple
occasions) of the following aliases:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

I get no response from the list, no error messages, and "mailq" doesn't
show any messages stuck in the queue.  In addition, /var/log/maillog
always claims success.

Strangely, I can subscribe to [email protected] using
[email protected], which is just as much an alias as any of the other
aliases I've tried.



Also, I cannot subscribe to [email protected] using the
following alias:
[email protected]

The saga is exactly the same as above:
I get no response from the list, no error messages, and "mailq" doesn't
show any messages stuck in the queue.  In addition, /var/log/maillog
always claims success.

Since I really want to get to the bottom of this, I made two aliases
especially for the purpose of joining this list:
[email protected]
[email protected]

Neither one of these aliases resulted in any errors either.  Just no
response from the intended recipient.

In the case of the [email protected] issue, I tried subscribing to
[email protected] using the following aliases:
lists-bibletime:        steve
lists-fedora:   steve
lists-kdedevel: steve
lists-sword:    steve

These aliases worked perfectly, and for most of an entire day, I
received 5 copies of every email sent to that list.

So the question arises, can I not use the character "-" in aliases?
So, I tried all of my intended aliases again, this time with the "-"
removed.  Still no joy.  I could completely understand if ezmlm is
designed to not allow "-", even if mailman is designed to allow it.
So, I mention that fact that aliases with "-" in them do seem to work
with mailman based lists.

I assume that "/etc/aliases" is application agnostic, since it is a
part of the "setup" package: version 2.6.1.1-1.fc6 on our system.
Also, I am using sendmail 8.13.8-2

Like I mentioned earlier, I have tried as many aliases as I can without
losing my mind on as many different mail clients as I think I have:
Mutt 1.4.2.2-5.fc6
Pine 4.64-3.lvn6
SquirrelMail 1.5.2 [CVS]

I have even removed a few of the aliases and set up actual users with
the same name:  for example, I created a user called "lists-ooo"  Of
course this users email address by default is [email protected].
For whatever reason, I could not even subscribe to [email protected]
with an email address that belongs to a fully functioning user on our
system (as opposed to an alias.)

To clarify, the reason that I am bringing this to you is merely because
I have this problem with all of the Ezmlm based mailing lists that I am
subscribed to.  So it is at least a good possibility that you would
have the information that I need.
Also to clarify, I am subscribed to all of the lists that I am having
issues with:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
In each case I had to use the alias "[email protected]" instead of a
more mailing list specific alias.

I am more than willing/able to provide you with any information that
you need to help me fix this problem.  Also, I am willing/able to try
any suggestions that you might have for me.
