I use this recipe with gmail and it works perfectly and automatically:

poll imap.gmail.com with interval 0 proto imap timeout 50, and tracepolls
        user [email protected], with password "PASSWD", is L_USER here, expunge 20, and ssl, and fetchall

And for other, non gmail, accounts:

poll SERVER with proto imap, timeout 70, and tracepolls
        user R_USER, with password PASSWD, is L_USER here, and fetchall


I don't touch pop3 if I can avoid it.

In my case, mail is sent for further processing by the local postfix server.
