force plain / login authentication

Hello,

I am dealing with a buggy pop3 server, that announces cram-md5 
authentication, but in fact does not do so (any more). Confirmed by the 
support.

As I will not be able to fix the remote server, I am wondering, are 
there a means to tell fetchmail to only use either plain or login? Both 
are advertised as well.

Adding "authenticate password" to fetchmailrc does not do the trick.

The connection itself is TLS secured
