smtphost - separate MTA required?

Hello,

does Fetchmail need to have an MTA (e.g. Postfix) installed on the system to be able to forward received mails (parameter "smtphost" in the configuration) to an SMTP server on another host?

If "yes" what will be the minimal required configuration of the MTA?
