Not really.
An idea might be:
_ set up fetchmail to retrieve from somewhere *without SSL*;
_ put a huge message on the server (so to have time for the next steps);
_ start fetchmail;
_ while it's fetching, unplug the network cable/drop the connection 
somehow/introduce a firewall block/...

However I didn]'t try this.
