When getmail switches mailboxes, it issues the EXPUNGE command automatically if there were messages that were deleted. The IMAP server is *supposed* to do this automatically, but some users reported messages not being deleted because their servers were buggy, so getmail does it explicitly. getmail has pretty much always done this, though. If this just recently stopped working for you, and you didn't change anything, it's almost certainly got to be something Yahoo broke. Try reporting the problem to Yahoo and see what they say?
