FWIW - I saw the same failure, I presume it was while POPping mail from 
Hotmail, (I see a lot of failures with Hotmail) (and I can't be sure 
which site because I run getmail with several rc files at the same 
time), so I made the change, and haven't seen any of these failures 
for... fourteen or so hours.

But Hotmail can be well-behaved for days at a time...
