I wondered about this myself ( getting gmails with getmail locally and 
maybe reading them on a phone if out ) and gave up.
for me deleted mails are still kept in ALL MAIL on google servers which 
I then go into their webpage and delete and then again delete them from 
bin.
The only answer I could think of was having local mail server accessible 
from the internet but I didn't want the hassle.
