Problems with getmail 5.10 and CentOS-7.6

I installed getmail 5.10 last night. Upon attempting to retrieve mail, I
got the following error:

--------
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/bin/getmail", line 59, in <module>
    from getmailcore import __version__, retrievers, destinations, filters,
\
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/getmailcore/retrievers.py", line
45, in <module>
    from getmailcore._retrieverbases import *
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/getmailcore/_retrieverbases.py",
line 74, in <module>
    ssl_version=ssl.PROTOCOL_TLS, ca_certs=None,
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'PROTOCOL_TLS'

-------

I reinstalled 5.9 and everything was fine. I haven't run getmail --dump,
and won't have time to look too much at this in the next few weeks. At this
point, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar error with
CentOS-7.6. I don't have time right now to try usual troubleshooting,
(other system, other user with no cruft--this account probably has tons of
cruft lying around). Just reinstalling 5.9 didn't fix it, I also had to
remove /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/getmail*. (I was in a hurry, so
took the sledgehammer approach, rather than testing if I could just remove
some of the site packages.

In a week or two, I'll have more time to troubleshoot, but just wondering
if the sparse info here gives any clue as to what's wrong. (I don't know
python, so if it is obvious to python coders, forgive me).
