getmail doesn't manipulate the UIDs provided by the IMAP server it connects
to, at all.  It just fetches them and then feeds them back exactly as provided
when fetching messages.  If getmail is trying to retrieve a message with UID
"*", that means the server provided that UID in its list response to the LIST
command.

There's a workaround in getmail for some broken behaviour in Exchange, where
it would include a UID in the LIST response but fail when the FETCH command
was given with that UID -- getmail logs a message about it and continues
(someone actually shows that behaviour in the above thread).

I'm not familiar with davmail, but it looks like aa proxy that speaks whatever
proprietary protocol to Exchange and provdes POP/IMAP/SMTP to an MUA using the
standard protocols?  Unless getmail is dying when it sees this UID, I would
think it likely to be a bug in DavMail, or in the upstream Exchange server.

When getmail issues the retrieve of the "*" message, what happens?
