Raspberry pi 3B - Authentication Error when trying to Read Gmail

No... What I was referring to was that I changed the security on the email
account to "Allow Access for Less Secure Apps". This is not related to the
2-step verification process.

After seeing your reply, I did try the 2-step verification process and set
up a specific app password for the Getmail process. Then I tried to run
Getmail again... and everything worked as it should. I can confirm that
this works with the older OS (Stretch) and also with the newer OS (Buster).
