The thing is that Python 2 has essentially gone out of maintenance with
its terminus release 2.7.18 last month,
and Getmail relies on Python's system libraries for the crypto and
protocol stuff to a great extent.

Python 2.7.16 and newer are probably okay today, but if there were
implementation flaws in Python 2 or its libraries to be discovered that
are critical to getmail's function, you would then be left without a
recourse.

Also, if you look at Python 2.7's history, it has seen several massive
improvements to its SSL modules in the more recent versions,  There was
a time when Python couldn't even properly reject invalid certificates...
2.7.9, 2.7.13, 2.7.16 mark important points, and it was not before
2.7.16 that Python's ssl library learned to operate securely by default.

look for any "New in version..." or "Changed in version..." lines of
<https://docs.python.org/2/library/ssl.html> to see how recently only
some features you could elsewhere take for granted arrived in Python 2.7.N.
