In short, when Gmail became the 900lb gorilla of email, they started acting like any other near-monopoly and doing whatever the hell they liked, and let everyone else have to try to dance to their tune -- if you can't deliver mail to Gmail (which remember, hosts tons of corporate mail under private domains as well), your email service is worse than useless. Forget standards, support, or interoperability. Let everyone else do what we say, or their email doesn't get delivered. Ask the administrator of any small email service exactly how much of their time they spend trying to figure out their latest deliverability problems to Gmail servers and devise workarounds. And it is literally impossible to get support from Google when you're trying to do this, except maybe if you're at the scale of Hotmail or Yahoo.
