Stefan, I am not going to speculate but this is too harsh.

getmail relies on a piece of software (python2) which reached EOL on
January 1st 2020.
Quite understandably distribution maintainers are not keen in introducing a
dependency which will not see any kind of patch (not even source-only
security patches) in the future.
Hence getmail is getting the boot from major software repositories.

The problem is cogent and today — as Martin Gregorie documented — is
cogent and time-sensitive: breakage is happening *now*.
This makes me assume good faith; I hope the two repositories and
maintainers will merge in the future.
