Thanks for the rapid reply.

As root python2 -c 'import ssl' yielded :

Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
   File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/ssl.py", line 98, in <module>
     import _ssl             # if we can't import it, let the error 
propagate
ImportError: No module named _ssl

So please excuse my total ignorance of Python, but I'm guessing I need 
to download an additional package or so and maybe re-install python 2.7.

Would you be kind enough to lead me by the hand and advise what steps I 
need to take?
