I run Getmail from cron (via a timeout controller, because I don't want 
multiple instances of Getmail running), it fires up every 15 minutes, if 
there's a failure I get an email.

That's about as difficult as falling off the proverbial roof.

You seem to be stuck on wanting to do things that will cause problems, 
and then inventing problems that won't exist if you do things correctly.

There is a century or two (or more!) of experience with email on this 
list, you appear not to want to follow anything that could be considered 
"best" practice, or even "yeah, okay, it'll work" practice.
