I'd like to correct one minor point... Francesco Ariis <[email protected]> wrote: > > I disagree with [Charles'] «just use Python 2» stance; To clarify, I do not believe anyone should use Python 2 instead of Python 3. I have nothing against Python 3, have been writing Python 3 code for many years, and have used Python 3 for any new code I have written for more than a decade. So if anyone thinks I'm anti-Python 3, they are completely wrong and I have no idea what broken logic they used to come to that erroneous conclusion. The reasons why I believe people can continue to use getmail with Python 2 are: 1) A version of my getmail supporting Python 3 is not yet available, and is not imminent. 2) I believe distributions dropped Python 2.7 precipitously and without good reason. Many other packages are kept around in parallel with newer versions when there are compatibility breaks; I see no reason why Python should be different. This decision seems to have been done more on a "religious" basis than any technical one. 3) It is not a security risk to continue to use getmail on Python 2.7.x. > at the same time not changing the name even when he explicitly asks so (with > a manifest reason: getmail6 introduced unexpected behaviours) comes off as > boorish, doubly so if followed by a patronising message Exactly. Roland, please change the name of your project to not include the word "getmail". It's my trademark, and you're polluting it.
