For future reference, to anyone distributing "getmail6", removal of copyright notices is not permitted by the license. There's an "and" in here that should have been "any". Charles ----- Forwarded message ----- Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2021 16:57:51 -0600 From: Charles Cazabon To: Roland Puntaier <[email protected]> Subject: getmail6 - GPLv2 license violation Hi, Roland, There's a licensing problem with your fork of getmail. In the file here: https://github.com/getmail6/getmail6/blob/master/getmailcore/__init__.py ... you have removed my copyright statement from the original file. For reference, that copyright statement (in the file's initial docstring) reads: getmail is Copyright (C) 1998-2019 Charles Cazabon. All rights reserved. Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2 (only). You should have received a copy of the license in the file COPYING. Removing any copyright notice from the code or documentation is a violation of copyright law, and therefore of the GNU GPLv2 license. As a courtesy, I am asking nicely that you immediately restore any copyright notices of mine that you have removed from any of the getmail-related files that you are distributing. I haven't checked all of the files you distribute, but they must remain in all places where they are in the original code, documentation, and any other files. As you have violated the license, I could invoke the automatic termination of your license rights as laid out in section 4 of the GPLv2. This would mean that you would no longer be able to distribute and getmail-related code at all, under any conditions, even if you were to attempt to come back into compliance with the license terms. However, I'm a nice guy, and as I say, I am giving you the courtesy of giving you one chance to correct this license violation. Please restore *all* of my copyright notices to the files you distribute. Do this promptly, and acknowledge by responding to me when you have done so, so that I may confirm you have come back into compliance with the license. Failure to rectify this issue will mean I have no option but to enforce the permanent termination of your license to anything getmail-related.
