That's not how getmail works - in fact, it can't work that way, as POP and
IMAP don't support that concept; the server does not track "what this client
has seen and what it hasn't".  getmail keeps track of the messages it has
seen, nothing else.

Not in the way you're talking about.  You only need to retrieve old mail once
for getmail to remember it as "seen" and not fetch it again (with the
appropriate options); you can delete the local copy afterwards and getmail
won't know or care.
