That's a good idea for single account. But  maybe it is not easy for multiple accounts. 
and using a [date] as a setup parameter may be more flexible.

just a pragmatic idea: As getmail works folder-based, what's about creating a subfolder e.g. "Archive" in your Gmail account, move the old, not to be synched stuff into this folder?
Would solve your issue without changing anything in your config.
