App passwords are definitely the simplest way to use getmail with Gmail.

OAUTH with Gmail isn't trivially simple, and since I don't have a Google
account it's difficult for me to test.  Others have posted instructions to the
list in the past, so looking in the archives is probably a good step.

They will have to get used to it.  Google is making 2-step verification
mandatory for all accounts at some point, I believe.  And not in the distant
future.
