Didn't they, at some point, offer another verification method with a second
email?  Unfortunately, like html email, it's becoming almost a necessity.

I've adjusted to work with it, but I also moved most of my important mail
from google.

A quick look at startpage (another service I prefer to google) :) shows a
bunch of results for 2FA with google without smart phone, though I didn't
look at any of them.
