Reading what Peter forwarded (I think), what he's saying is:

(1) You run this DavMail Gateway program on some machine in your control.  It
speaks to Exchange using whatever standard or proprietary protocols are in use
for mail, calendar, directory services, etc.  This is the only program talking
to the Microsoft backend, so *it* would be the one that needs to be registered
with Azure.  I have no idea if this program actually supports that or not.

That page was updated a little less than a year ago, so it doesn't appear to
be total abandonware

(2) You then configure getmail to talk IMAP or POP to the DavMail Gateway
instance you're configured.  That proxies your mail connections.  Microsoft
doesn't know there's a different program behind DavMail, so there's no need to
register it etc.

getmail's config would then just be a standard one.  I don't know if DavMail
would take care of the OAUTH2 authentication, or whether you would still need
a helper app for integrating with getmail.

I could be wrong, but that's how I interpreted it:
