getmail slow with gmail POP3

Hello list,
    in the last few days I have noticed that getmail (debian stable) takes
a long time (minutes) / gets stuck when I check a gmail account. When I
--trace, I get this

    _connect() [_retrieverbases.py:465] establishing POP3 SSL connection to pop.gmail.com:995
    # stuck here, then a flurry of msgid/timestamp

Did anyone else notice this or is it just me?
