This is probably just my ignorance of the GNU build system, but if I do

autoconf
./configure

with the attached configure.in file, I get

./configure: line 542: syntax error near unexpected token `"(c'
./configure: line 542: `  echo $ac_n "(cached) $ac_c" 1>&6'

Ideas?
