likewise.  although to make it airtight, the different character
numbers of characters in different character-sets would have to be
accounted for.  which basically means UTF-8, i guess.  but your
proposals would work in most cases.  i wonder if ifile should be
"cleaned up" first as far as the design and the code-base is
concerned.
