I'm coming to similar conclusions, and discussions like this on this
list (over the past few years I've subscribed) have helped me gain some
semblance of clarity on the underlying issues, which I've tried to
capture in a rather dry description I recently wrote up:

It puts IM2000, as a proposal, on a continuum of challenge/response-ish
systems (and proposals) and addresses some of the points you and others
have made (including points I made here quite some time ago).

(Whether I'm really getting *clarity* is debatable, of course.  Further,
it's one thing to see more clearly what's wrong with existing systems
and proposals; it's quite another to go from there to figuring out what
*would* work, which is something I've been thinking about and am
starting to write up as a proposal, now that it's taken some shape and
seems to not be obviously wrong.)

Anyway, I'd appreciate feedback on that web page, either in private or,
if pertinent to IM2000, on this list.
