XMPP, a solid, actively developed protocol base for IM2000?

taking up wes' invitation to study XMPP, i visited newsgroup
gmane.ietf.xmpp on http://news.gmane.org/gmane.ietf.xmpp and IMO this
could be a worthwhile effort to make IM2000 a definition within the
XMPP framework.

here are excerpts that might be useful, together with their URLs.
note that the XMPP working group is very active, and new refinements
to some draft overtake each other within days. i think this is a good
opportunity to tackle the technical aspect of IM2000, leaving all the
legalese aside without loosing that perspective.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : XMPP Core
	Author(s)	: P. Saint-Andre, J. Miller
	Filename	: draft-ietf-xmpp-core-18.txt
	Pages : 95
	Date : 2003-9-8

This document describes the core features of the Extensible Messaging
and Presence Protocol (XMPP), a protocol for streaming XML [1]
elements in order to exchange messages and presence information in
close to real time. While XMPP provides a generalized, extensible
framework for transporting structured information, it is used mainly
for the purpose of building instant messaging and presence
applications that meet the requirements of RFC 2779.
