with im2000, i'd say the message itself, the notification(s) and the
arrival of a message need timestamps.  people should be able to
customize this:  when these three stamps are only a few minutes apart,
discard any of them.

the problem here is this:  sender tells mail-ISP to keep the message
one week for collection, and has a special arrangement what to do with
[c]older messages, which make them more expensive to retrieve.
