Hotmail sells information about you and permission to spam you to third
parties to partly make up the operating loss; the remainder is written off as
marketing expense for "Microsoft Passport" and assorted technologies.

Yes, it does.  ISPs no longer have to pay for the storage for their customers'
incoming mail /at all/, because it is stored by the sender.  That's a huge
difference.
