I believe this came up on the list a while ago (search the archives).
The consensus seemed to be (if I remember correctly): excellent idea,
it'll go in the hopper for 1.3.x or 1.4.x
For what it's worth, I run something fron cron, and it's not too
horrible of a hack. It would be nice if it happened right away, but
every 5 minutes is decent (though this would probably get problemic if I
had large numbers of users).
