where did you get the idea that IMAP had any connection to web browsing?

IMAP is "internet mailbox access protocol". it's a way to access a  
mailbox sitting on a server- that's it.

maybe you're thinking about the fact that most webmail interfaces  
only work with IMAP mailboxes? the only requirement for a webmail  
interface is that the server not delete messages unless specifically  
told to- in fact i remember years ago, seeing a few webmail  
interfaces which were capable of working with POP3 mailboxes. nobody  
does it anymore because IMAP servers are now more common than they  
sere back then.

the big advantages of IMAP are that (1) the protocol was designed to  
have the messages stay on the server, and (2) the protocol allows end  
users to create and work with server-side folders, something which  
POP3 has no provision for.
