ESMTP_PREFER_IPV6_MX=1 is the default setting in the courierd configuration file. As installed, by default, it should be there. However if it was manually removed, or changed to ESMTP_PREFER_IPV6_MX=0, then Courier will try IPv4 addresses first. It's up to you how you want it set. Just note that in the event of a complete connection failure the last attempted IP address, IPv4 or IPv6, will have its error logged.
