Turns out that letsencrypt changed private keys from RSA to ECDSA.

Using openssl ec -in my-privkey.pem -noout -text exposes the priv: and 
pub: parts of the key.  Mystery solved.

I don't know what kind of key dhparams.pem is so I don't know if it's 
readable or not.
