What version is this?

Old versions that used Gamin reported Gamin going belly-up as an EIO error.

Any kind of a filesystem corruption or a hardware error is going to dump a
whole bunch of stuff to syslog. If this is all you're seeing it's just a
synthesized error message, reporting system-wide chaos of this sorty, and
not tied to any particular directory. I see that EIO is also used to report
closed sockets in the internal DNS resolver, so that's another possibility.
