Debugging new server authentication

Hi everyone,


I'm in the process of relocating my email server, thanks to my chosen 
VPS hosting provider choosing to cease offering VPS hosting services.

My current email server (through which this email is being sent) is 
successfully authenticating against MySQL/MariaDB server, however I want 
the new one to auth against a PostgreSQL server.

I'm running Debian sid, using the Debian provided packages for all 
components.

I'm stuck where I'm trying to debug why auth is failing.

`authtest <username>` on the new server gives "Authentication FAILED: 
Input/output error" in response.

Corresponding log entries by the authdaemon are not helpful enough (even 
with 'DEBUG_LOGIN=2' set in the authdaemonrc file).

Each attempt to use `authtest` generates these four lines:

Feb 02 05:56:46 couriermta authdaemond[5507]: authpgsql: TEMPFAIL - no 
more modules will be tried


I haven't yet figured out how to increase PostgreSQL's logging 
sufficiently to show me what it's receiving from authdaemon, nor what 
it's replying with, but I KNOW that authdaemon is at least sending the 
query - when I have PostgreSQL stopped, I get "PGSQL_CONNECTION could 
not be established" in one of the log entries from authdaemon.


When I manually run the listed SQL query within pgAdmin, I get the 
correct record from the table so I believe it's something within Courier 
that's not working correctly.

Any advise on what/where to look from here?
