Possibly that's the problem, but that's the version in the debian repository

Yes (I actually rsynced everything from the real server still running 
bullseye, i.e. cyrus 3.6.2 with no indexing at all).
Then I found this bug

and added "mailbox_legacy_dirs: true" to my imapd.cond

I already tried, same result

since there was no previous database (and I delete it anyway every time 
I try) I did not migrate it. I explicitly configured it to skiplist, 
should I try twoskip?
