PLAIN+TLS here.
Switched from MD5 with the upgrade to version 3.8, if I recall correctly.

I've done
  early => 2.5 with xfer
  2.5 => 3.2 vith sync_client
  3.2 => 3.8 vith sync_client

Upgarde to 3.10 or 12 will certainly be done same way.
